The first “anti-establishment” beach town to emerge in the early 80″s, Hikkaduwa was a hidden gem that became a backpackers haven. Although larger hotels have now moved in, cheap and cheerful B&B”s, quirky cafés, and delicious street-food are can still be found in abundance. Hikkaduwa”s claim to fame currently is its nightlife, with a host of bars and “beach clubs” that thump out tunes from sunset to sunrise throughout the tourist season.
Hikkaduwa has some decent surf, as well as dive spots, and the locals themselves run many of the establishments. Combined with the street food and nightlife, it”s a very vibrant beach town and definitely worth a visit.
